What's the Computer Network Management course about?

This course has been developed in partnership with Cisco and Microsoft to equip students with the skills and knowledge employers need for a range of professional IT careers related to networking. It is also designed to promote and develop a broad range of skills, personal qualities and approaches that will provide a platform for further study, successful career advancement and lifelong learning.

The course is suitable for people already working in networking, who want to develop their skills and gain a higher-level qualification, or those wanting to begin a career in this field. Students have the opportunity to gain vendor certifications in industry standard products, for example, Microsoft (Microsoft Certified Information Technology Professional:Server Administration) and CISCO (CISCO Certified Network Associate). They develop practical skills in network administration within the infrastructure, implementation of Active directory and troubleshooting, and in the use of Windows 2008 Enterprise edition operating system and CISCO multilayer switches and routers. There are also units that develop personal effectiveness and employment skills and a key feature of the course is work-related learning.

The Manchester College is approved by The Open University as an appropriate organisation to offer higher education programmes leading to Open University Validated Awards.

This programme in computer network management has been developed and will be delivered by The Manchester College. It has been validated through a process of external peer review, by The Open University, as being of an appropriate standard and quality to lead to Open University Validated Award of Foundation Degree in Computer Network Management (OU). Assessment makes use of a range of activities, including reports, oral presentations, group work, practical assignments, time-constrained tests, peer assessment and live industry briefs.. Achievement is evidenced by the production of a portfolio of evidence.

What will I be able to do after I've completed this course?

This course has been designed with employers to prepare students for a variety of professional IT careers, such as network administrator, network designer; network professional, network technician and specialised network help desk administrator. Students can also progress on an academic basis onto Salford University's BSc (Honours) Information Technology. In addition, the Open University also allows progression onto the BSc (Honours) Information and Communication Technologies.

What qualifications or experience do I need to do this course?

Applicants are required to have a BTEC Level 3 National Diploma/Extended Diploma with Merit, Pass, Pass or a BTEC Level 3 National Certificate/Extended Certificate with Merit, Merit in a computer-related subject area, or an equivalent level 3 qualification with appropriate content. Minimum UCAS tariff points required: 160.

Mature applicants (aged 21 or over) who are able to demonstrate relevant skills or knowledge gained in employment or vocational activity may also apply.
