What's the Introduction to Linux course about?

This course is aimed at developing student awareness of an alternative operating system and software development environment. Linux has many features similar to the Unix operating system and is becoming more popular due to its reliability and completeness.

This introductory course is designed to give professional IT managers an awareness of the Linux technology, and its features. You will study:

Linux setup and installation

. Installing the software
. Logging on as administrator
. Setting up user accounts
. File backup

Linux scripting

. Language syntax
. GUI scripting language
. Changing file ownership

Housekeeping routines

. Account locking
. Changing password

Networking overview

. System calls
. Client and server concepts
. TCP/IP client server support using Linux
. NIS , INFS

The course will be delivered through lectures, demonstrations and handouts and has an emphasis on skills training based on current industry standards.

How long is the Introduction to Linux course and when will it be taught?

This is a 30 hour programme which can be studied in the evening for three hours per week over 10 weeks. In addition there is a requirement for delegates to engage in supported self study for approximately 15 hours (one to two hours per week).

the Introduction to Linux course?

There is no requirement to undertake an assessment with this skills based course, however, for those seeking a formal qualification, an Edexcel PDQ Level 4 Award is available. All delegates will receive a certificate of skills validation from the Media Centre of Vocational Excellence.

What will I be able to go on to do after I've completed the Introduction to Linux course?

On completion of this course, delegates should be able to understand the features and functions of the Linux operating system, describe the hardware configurations required to support Linux and demonstrate an awareness of the standard features of a Linux network. Delegates will have the opportunity to further expand their skills on one of our many courses including opportunities within higher education.
