What's the course about?

The programme is designed to provide students with the knowledge, understanding and vocational skills required for employment in interactive media, or for progression to an undergraduate degree. Working with state-of-the-art facilities the course is geared towards the specific needs of this fast-paced and exciting industry.

The course will investigate all relevant disciplines: design, video, CD-ROM production, website development, digital image manipulation, and animation. The course has a strong emphasis on conceptual ideas, design, and theoretical contexts involved in interactive media.

The course is suitable for individuals with the appropriate creative ability from a variety of backgrounds (music, design, video, computing, photography, sound etc) and can prepare students for careers in a range of professional activities from web design to marketing.

To obtain the HND you need to pass 16 units (seven core and nine option units) from those indicated below.
Core units:
• Computer Applications in Art and Design
• Computing Fundamentals
• Interactive Media Design and Authoring
• Interactive Media Web Authoring
• Historical and Contextual Referencing
• Interactive Media Professional Practice
• Cultural Interpretation of Design

Option units:
• Interactive Media Professional Team Brief (counts as two units)
• Animation Techniques using Interactive Media
• 3D Computer Modelling and Animation
• Computer Interface Design Principles
• Sound Production and Editing using Interactive Media
• Electronic Communication Applications
• Audio Visual Techniques in Interactive Media
• Marketing Development using Interactive Media
• Digital and Video Post Production and Editing
• Image Manipulation Applications

This is a full-time course running for two years during the day.

What qualifications or experience do I need to do this course?
You will need:
• One or more A Levels or an AVCE in relevant subjects
• A minimum of four GCSEs, to include English and Mathematics
• To be able to demonstrate creative skills - usually through a portfolio.

Mature students who are able to demonstrate skills or knowledge gained in employment or vocational activity may be exempt from some of the above entry requirements.

Which qualifications will I be awarded if I successfully complete the course?
You will be awarded a HND in Interactive Media.

What will I be able to do after I've completed this course?
This programme has been structured to meet the growing demand by employers for knowledge and skills in digital creativity and multimedia authoring. It opens up opportunities in career areas such as multimedia designer/developer, web designer, webmaster, interactive editor, digital photographer, digital video producer as well as the chance to apply for undergraduate degrees/further higher education courses within local and national institutions.
