What's the course about?

The HNC is designed to provide students with the knowledge, understanding and vocational skills required for employment in interactive media, or for progression to an undergraduate degree. Working with state-of-the-art facilities the course is geared towards the specific needs of this fast-paced and exciting industry. It takes into account all the related disciplines - video, audio, graphics, and animation - which combine digitally in an integrated way to create interactive media products.

The course is suitable for individuals with the appropriate creative ability from a variety of backgrounds (design, video, computing, photography, sound etc) and can prepare students for careers in a range of professional activities from web design to marketing.

Core units include:
• Computer Applications in Art and Design
• Computing Fundamentals
• Interactive Media Design and Authoring
• Interactive Media Web Authoring
• Historical and Contextual Referencing
• Interactive Media Professional Practice
• Cultural Interpretation of Design

Option units (three from the following):
• Interactive Media Professional Team Brief (counts as two units)
• Animation Techniques using Interactive Media
• Computer Interface Design Principles
• Audio Visual Techniques in Interactive Media

A HND Top-up course is available for students who want to convert their HNC to a HND by studying additional units.

Option units:
• 3D Computer Modelling and Animation
• Digital and Video Post Production and Editing
• Marketing Development using Interactive Media
• Image Manipulation Applications
• Sound Production and Editing using Interactive Media
• Electronic Communication Applications

The course will be taught by lectures, demonstrations and assignments, and you will be assessed through project work across a range of units throughout the course. Feedback and interim assessments are given verbally through tutorials and in written form, using well established systems. Final assessment will include a portfolio presentation and demonstration of work produced.

How long is the course and when will it be taught?

The HNC in Interactive Media is studied for two academic years part time either in the day or in the evening. There is a fast track option which is studied in one academic year, days and evenings. The HND Top-up is studied in one further academic year for one session per week; usually during the day, or on an evening.

What qualifications or experience do I need to do this course?
It is desirable for you to have a minimum of four GCSEs, including English and Maths. Alternatively you may have completed a Level 3 qualification, such as an AVCE or similar qualification. You should also be able to demonstrate creative skills - usually through a portfolio. Mature students who do not meet these entry requirements may instead be able to demonstrate skills or knowledge gained in employment or in other vocational activity.

Students who wish to complete the HND Top-up course must have completed a HNC in Multimedia or Interactive Media.

Which qualifications will I be awarded if I successfully complete the course?
On completion you will be awarded a Higher National Certificate in Interactive Media. Those who have studied the HND Top-up will be awarded a Higher National Diploma in Multimedia/Interactive Media.

What will I be able to do after I've completed this course?
On completion of the course you will have the opportunity to progress on to a degree or another higher education course. The programme has been structured to meet the growing demand by employers for knowledge and skills in digital creativity and multimedia authoring in many different fields, such as education, entertainment, training, leisure and communication.
