What's the course about?

This course explores the intricacies of programming and software development using object-oriented technology and methodology. High level languages such as Java and C++ are explored in some detail. Units available are as follows:

302 Developing software components using C++
• Interpreting program specifications to develop software
• Using functions
• Saving and retrieving data from disk
• The principles of software testing and management
• Developing software components
• Using pre-defined functions
• Using Object Oriented Programming (OOP)
• Producing documentation

305 Developing software components using Java
• Interpreting program specifications to develop software
• Developing code for implementation
• Producing documentation
• Creating classes
• Testing using change control

307 Requirements analysis and systems specification
• Planning for the identification of customer requirements
• Producing a logical design specification
• Identifying implementation and maintain procedures
• Establishing customer requirements
• Producing a physical design specification

304 Developing software components using Visual Basic
• Interpreting program specifications to develop software
• Using built-in database management features
• Testing software using change control
• Using components to create a graphical user interface
• Developing code for implementation
• Producing documentation

306 Creating designs for software
• Explaining the concepts of software design
• Specifying data types and data structures
• Validating the completed design specification
• Using diagrammatic representations for design
• Developing a software design specification
• Identifying health and safety requirements

The course is delivered via lectures and tutorials. You will complete practical assessments and online multiple-choice questions.

How long is the course and when will it be taught?

The course is studied for 10 hours per week over 36 weeks during the day or evening. Individual units may be taken throughout the year. Individual units usually require 45 hours' study. Options for distance learning also exist.

You will need a Diploma in Programming or Level 2 Diploma for IT Practitioners (Software Development).

You will be awarded a Level 3 Advanced Diploma for IT Practitioners (Software Development).

What will I be able to do after I've completed this course?
On completion of this course you could go on to study on NVQs, HNCs or HNDs in Information Technology.
