What's the First Line Management Certificate course about?

This course has been designed to improve the competence and confidence of those who are likely to become first line managers (team leaders or supervisors) or who are already in post but have had little or no formal training in their role.

You will cover the following areas:
. Managing self
. Understanding organisations
. Managing activities
. Managing people
. Communication
• Management skills and competency
• Managing change
• Managing resources
• Developing people
• Managing information

Each workshop is linked to a work based assignment that is designed to develop competencies essential for managers in the 21st Century.

The programme structure includes the study of the following competencies:
• Acting Assertively
• Acting Strategically
• Behaving Ethically
• Building Teams
• Improving Communications
• Focusing on Results

The course will be delivered by informal lectures and group work. It will be assessed by workbased assignments and a management project.

How long is the First Line Management Certificate course
and when will it be taught?

The course is taught over one year, either one day per week or one afternoon and evening per week.

Where is the First Line Management Certificate course taught?

At our Openshaw Campus, Ashton Old Road or at our St John's Centre,
3 New Quay Street, Central Manchester.

How much will the First Line Management Certificate course
cost me?

The course would normally cost approximately £2,000 but we are now able to fund this course to employees from SMEs in Greater Manchester, so there is no charge.

What qualifications or experience do I need to do the
First Line Management Certificatecourse?

There are no formal entry requirements but students must be in paid or voluntary employment to enable them to complete the assessments. Candidates should be practising or potential first line managers, with two years' full-time work experience and a background that will enable them to benefit from the programme.
Selection will be by telephone interview.

Which qualification will I be awarded if I successfully complete
the First Line Management Certificate course?

Upon successful completion of the course, you will be awarded the Institute of Leadership and Management Level 3 Certificate in First Line Management.

What will I be able to go on to do after I’ve completed the
First Line Management Certificatecourse?

This course can lead to career development in first line management roles.
It provides the knowledge and skills appropriate to the Level 4 NVQ in Management and offers a clear progression route to the Level 4 Introductory Diploma in Management, the Level 4 Diploma in Management or other management awards.
