What's the course about?

This course aims to develop skills and understanding of practical implementation, configuration and management of Cisco routers and a network. Learners will be taught the process and practice of design, technical troubleshooting and fault diagnosis to enable them to build a scalable network. It is suitable for those who are already employed in system support roles in the IT industry and who wish to develop further knowledge and skills to support and/or extend their work activities

The course covers the following:
• Implementation and configuration of scalable Cisco internetworks
• Design of scalable Cisco internetworks
• Troubleshooting of scalable Cisco internetworks

Practical and theoretical labs will include: EIGRP fundamentals; OSPF operation, configuration and verification; mesh frame relay; multi-area OSPF operation; configuring virtual links; Cisco router for integrated IS-IS operation; control of routing traffic; router redistribution in a network.

The course is delivered via blended learning, which comprises lectures with on-screen demos and Cisco academy curriculum material with hands on lab exercises. You will be assessed on practical lab activities and a portfolio of work that you will build up.

How long is the course and when will it be taught?

CCNP 1 (semester 5) takes 15 weeks to complete either by day release or one evening per week for 30 weeks.

What qualifications or experience do I need to do this course?
Applicants will be required to have CCNA status experience of network administration and management is preferred. Students must have prior experience of configuring Cisco routers.

Which qualifications will I be awarded if I successfully complete the course?
You will be awarded an OCR IT Practitioners Systems Support Certificate at Level 4.

What will I be able to do after I've completed this course?
On completion of further units students may progress to Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) status. In addition there are progression routes into NVQ level 4 courses and graduate apprenticeships. Career opportunities exist in the areas of systems administration and management in small to medium sized IT infrastructures. There are also possibilities of moving on to one of our foundation degrees in computers or security.
